London Thamesport is the UK’s first automated container terminal. The 655 metres of quay are equipped with eight ship-to-shore gantry cranes, the largest of which is capable of working vessels with containers stowed 22-wide on deck.

Working in tandem with the automated cranes in the container yard, and using a specially designed magazine-type operation to optimise the sequencing of containers between quay and storage yard, London Thamesport delivers consistently high levels of productivity. This focus on ensuring the rapid turnaround of vessels helps shipping lines maintain schedule reliability; an essential factor in delivering customer satisfaction.

Continual investment in new facilities and equipment helps deliver a dynamic process of continuous improvement. These include a new 2.7 hectare empty storage area, new Kalmar and Briggs empty lifting equipment, new and upgraded Terberg tractor units, and an increased number of reefer points.

London Thamesport also remains at the forefront of the port industry with its application of information technology. State-of-the-art software allows staff to monitor each container’s progress through the port, from ship’s rail to gate departure or vice versa.

London Thamesport is linked to the Destin8 port community system, allowing real time communication between all key port sectors, including the U.K. Border Agency, shipping and forwarding agents, shipping lines, hauliers and intermodal logistic providers.
